Beginner's Guide to Raffia Weaving

Beginner's Guide to Raffia Weaving

New to raffia weaving? You're in the right place. This guide will introduce you to the basics, from choosing your raffia and tools to starting your first basket.

What is Raffia?

Raffia is a natural fibre made from the leaves of the raffia palm. It is strong, flexible and easy to work with, making it ideal for weaving baskets, bags, hats and decorative pieces.

At Raffia & Twine, we offer both natural and hand-dyed raffia in a beautiful range of colours, so you can create something that's uniquely your own.

What You'll Need

  • Raffia — natural or hand-dyed

  • A blunt tapestry needle

  • Scissors

  • A centre coil or base

  • A little patience and creativity!

You don't need lots of equipment to get started. One of the lovely things about raffia weaving is that you can begin with a few simple tools and learn as you go.

Your First Project

A simple coiled basket is a wonderful place to start. It introduces you to the basic techniques of working with raffia and gives you a finished piece you can use and enjoy.

Our beginner basket-making kits include the materials and instructions you need to get started, making them a great option if you're new to raffia weaving.

Ready to Learn in Person?

If you'd rather learn hands-on, join a Raffia & Twine basket-making workshop in the Adelaide Hills. Karen will guide you through the techniques in a relaxed and friendly environment.
